Reflections from 一 to 龠

Chinese Information Technology and the U.S. Military

Chinese Information Technology and the U.S. Military

One distinct research challenge has been piecing together U.S. military interest and involvement in the early years of Chinese computing and the latter years of Chinese typewriting. The cast of characters and agencies is overwhelmingly large: CIA, Air Force, Army, not to mention the private sector (IBM, Itek, RAND…). The declassified materials I’ve collected are rich, but nothing like what I’ve compiled for the earlier periods. How I wish I could do oral histories with the people who took part in this work, particularly in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. And then how to get at parallel histories in mainland China, Taiwan, and the former Soviet Union?
